What TPMS is and why the light matters
TPMS stands for tyre pressure monitoring system. On any car first registered from 2012 onwards it’s a legal requirement, and a TPMS warning light that stays illuminated is an MOT failure, not an advisory.
Most cars use a direct system: a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel, built into the valve, radioing its pressure to the car. Those batteries are sealed in and typically last seven to ten years, so on an older car the sensors simply reach the end of their life. That’s why the light often appears on a car that has had nothing done to it.
Light on solid, or light flashing?
It’s worth knowing the difference, because it tells you how urgent this is. A steady warning light usually means the tyre really is low, so check the pressures first. It may be doing exactly its job and telling you about a slow puncture.
A light that flashes for about a minute at start-up and then stays on is the system itself reporting a fault: a dead sensor, a missing one, or one that hasn’t been paired. That’s the version that needs a sensor rather than a pump.
What we do on site
We read the system with a TPMS tool to find which sensor isn’t reporting, take the tyre off the rim, fit a new programmable sensor, clone or programme it to your vehicle, refit and rebalance the wheel, then relearn the system so the dashboard light goes out before we leave.
A note on aerosol sealant: if you have used a puncture repair can, the sealant coats the sensor and often kills it. That’s why a can that “fixed” a puncture sometimes turns into a TPMS bill a fortnight later.
Sensors, valves and the cheap failure nobody mentions
The rubber-sealed part of a TPMS valve is a service item. Every time a tyre is changed, that seal, washer and nut should be renewed. It’s a few pounds and it prevents the slow leak around the valve that gets misdiagnosed as a puncture.
It also prevents corrosion welding an aluminium valve stem into the wheel, which turns a routine tyre change into a snapped sensor and a new one to buy. We fit a fresh service kit as a matter of course.

Are tyre plug repair kits legal in the UK?
A DIY string plug isn’t a legal permanent repair in the UK. British Standard BS AU 159 requires the tyre to be removed from the rim, inspected from the inside and repaired with a combined plug-and-patch unit by a trained fitter. Aerosol sealant and plug kits are strictly get-you-home measures, and many tyre technicians will refuse to work on a wheel full of sealant. A proper repair is done on the van in about 30 minutes.
