Reading your tyre size
Everything we need is moulded into the sidewall. A code like 225/55 R17 94V means the tyre is 225mm wide, the sidewall height is 55% of that width, it fits a 17-inch rim, 94 is the load index and V is the speed rating.
The load index and speed rating matter more than people think. Fitting a lower-rated tyre than the manufacturer specified can invalidate your insurance, and on vans in particular the load index isn’t optional. If you can’t find the code, give us your registration and we’ll look it up.
Budget, mid-range or premium: the honest version
A premium tyre from Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli or Bridgestone stops shorter in the wet and lasts longer. On a car doing motorway miles, or anything heavy and fast, that’s money well spent and we would fit one to our own vehicle.
On a ten-year-old runabout doing four thousand miles a year, a good mid-range tyre is the sensible choice and the premium one will perish from age before it wears out. We’ll say so. What we’ll not do is fit the cheapest thing on the shelf to a car that needs better, or sell you a premium tyre because it makes us more.
One rule holds whatever the budget: match tyres across an axle. Two different brands on the same axle upsets the balance of grip and it will show in the wet.
What is included in the price
The tyre, the fitting, a new valve, wheel balancing, torquing to the manufacturer’s specification and disposal of the old tyre. Not a call-out fee, not a disposal charge, not a balancing extra bolted on at the end.
Waste tyres can’t go to landfill in the UK, so yours goes through a licensed route and is generally recycled into road surfacing, carpet underlay or fuel. You don’t have to do anything with it.
When to replace rather than wait
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. The safe answer is to replace at 3mm, because wet braking distances lengthen sharply below that, long before the tyre is illegal.
Age matters too, and it’s the one people forget. Rubber hardens and cracks whether or not the car is driven, so a tyre over about ten years old should be replaced regardless of tread. The four-digit code on the sidewall gives the week and year it was made: 2319 means the twenty-third week of 2019.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?
The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm, measured across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference of the tyre. Below that you face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre, so a car with four illegal tyres is a £10,000 offence and a licence gone. A 20p coin is the quick check: if the outer band of the coin is visible in the groove, the tyre needs looking at.
What happens to my old tyre?
It’s taken away and disposed of legally at no extra charge. Waste tyres can’t go to landfill in the UK, so they go through a licensed disposal route and are usually recycled into surfacing, carpet underlay or fuel. You don’t need to do anything, and you’ll not be left with a tyre in the garage or a disposal fee added at the end.
Do you balance the wheel after fitting a tyre?
Yes, every time, and it’s included in the price. The van carries a wheel balancer, so the wheel is balanced properly on site rather than refitted and left to vibrate. An unbalanced wheel causes a shake through the steering at 50 to 70mph, wears the tyre unevenly and puts load through the suspension. If you already have a vibration, wheel balancing on its own starts at £15 per wheel.
