Mobile puncture repair

A repairable puncture costs a fraction of a new tyre. The trick is knowing which ones are repairable, and saying so when one isn’t. Here’s exactly how that call gets made.

This guy literally saved my life. My wheel went close to Duxford and they came within 30 minutes on a Sunday around 6pm and fixed it on the spot for a very good price. Like, who does that? Thanks to them I didn’t have to pay a fortune for a recovery.

The rule: British Standard BS AU 159

Tyre repairs in the UK are governed by British Standard BS AU 159. It’s not a guideline, it’s the standard every reputable fitter works to, and it says a car or light van tyre can only be repaired if the damage sits inside the “minor repair area”, the central three-quarters of the tread width, running the whole way round the tyre.

Within that area, the puncture must be less than 6mm across. Outside it, on the shoulder or the sidewall, the tyre can’t be repaired safely at any price, because that part of the tyre flexes constantly and no repair will hold.

The standard also requires the tyre to come off the rim so it can be inspected from the inside. Damage that looks like a neat little screw hole from outside quite often turns out to have been driven on, with the tell-tale rubber dust and chafing on the inner liner. That tyre is scrap, and no honest fitter will patch it.

How a proper repair is actually done

The wheel comes off and the tyre comes off the rim. The injury is inspected inside and out, then reamed out to clean the hole. A combined plug-and-patch unit goes in. The plug fills the injury and seals it against water, the patch bonds to the inner liner and takes the stress. The area is buffed, cemented and rolled down properly.

Then the tyre goes back on, the valve is replaced, the wheel is balanced on the van and refitted to the correct torque. Start to finish it’s about half an hour, and the repair lasts the rest of the tyre’s life.

Why string plugs and aerosol sealant aren’t repairs

A string plug pushed in from the outside without removing the tyre isn’t a legal permanent repair in the UK. It doesn’t allow the inside of the tyre to be inspected, and it does nothing about damage to the internal structure. It’s a get-you-home measure and nothing more.

The aerosol sealant cans that came with your car instead of a spare are the same. They will get you moving, but they coat the inside of the tyre and the TPMS sensor in gunge, and plenty of fitters will refuse the job or charge extra to clean it out. If you have used one, say so when you call, because it changes what we bring.

Run-flats, and when we’ll tell you no

Most manufacturers don’t sanction repairs to run-flat tyres. Once a run-flat has been driven on while deflated, the reinforced sidewall may already have broken down internally, and there’s no way to see that from the outside. We’ll tell you straight rather than take your money for a repair we don’t trust.

The same applies to any tyre with more than one previous repair nearby, cord showing, a bulge in the sidewall, or tread already close to the 1.6mm legal limit. Repairing a tyre that’s about to need replacing anyway isn’t doing you a favour.

Mobile puncture repair: your questions

Can my puncture be repaired, or do I need a new tyre?

It depends where the damage is. Under British Standard BS AU 159, a puncture can only be repaired if it’s less than 6mm across and sits in the central three-quarters of the tread, known as the minor repair area. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder can’t be repaired safely and means a new tyre. Saffron Walden Tyres 24/7 checks on site and says which it’s before any work starts.

Are tyre plug repair kits legal in the UK?

A DIY string plug isn’t a legal permanent repair in the UK. British Standard BS AU 159 requires the tyre to be removed from the rim, inspected from the inside and repaired with a combined plug-and-patch unit by a trained fitter. Aerosol sealant and plug kits are strictly get-you-home measures, and many tyre technicians will refuse to work on a wheel full of sealant. A proper repair is done on the van in about 30 minutes.

Can a run-flat tyre be repaired?

Almost never. Most manufacturers refuse to sanction a repair to a run-flat, because once it has been driven on while deflated the internal structure may already be damaged, and there’s no reliable way to inspect it from the outside. Saffron Walden Tyres 24/7 will say whether a run-flat is repairable rather than guess, and can supply and fit a replacement the same day.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?

The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm, measured across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference of the tyre. Below that you face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre, so a car with four illegal tyres is a £10,000 offence and a licence gone. A 20p coin is the quick check: if the outer band of the coin is visible in the groove, the tyre needs looking at.

Do you balance the wheel after fitting a tyre?

Yes, every time, and it’s included in the price. The van carries a wheel balancer, so the wheel is balanced properly on site rather than refitted and left to vibrate. An unbalanced wheel causes a shake through the steering at 50 to 70mph, wears the tyre unevenly and puts load through the suspension. If you already have a vibration, wheel balancing on its own starts at £15 per wheel.
